★ Preschool and Primary School (3-11 years old)

JESS’s primary schools in Arabian Ranches and Jumeirah are home to children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (3-5 years) and Primary School (6-11 years). The JESS Primary School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England, offering theme-based subjects and real-life learning, all linked to the UAE national agenda.

Preschool

The curriculum is aligned with the EYFS statutory framework published by the Department for Education, which sets standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to 5 years old. The JESS curriculum is based on evidence of how children learn and reflects the knowledge, skills and understanding that children need as a foundation for school. There are seven areas in the EYFS statutory framework that shape the curriculum:

Key areas: Personal, social and emotional development; physical development; communication and language

Areas of expertise: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; Expressive Arts and Design

The curriculum is complemented by specialist teaching in PE, Music, IT and Library.

At JESS, the approach to teaching in the pre-school stage is play-based learning. Play is the most powerful tool for young children to learn and understand the world around them and fosters curiosity.

Play and Exploration – Engage · Discover and explore · Play with things they know · Willing to try

Creative and Critical Thinking – Think · Have their own ideas · Make connections · Work with ideas

Active Learning – Motivation · Engage and concentrate · Keep trying · Enjoy finishing what they start

Foundation Curriculum:

Developing reflective, curious and independent learners is fundamental to the JESS learning programme. Technology is an integral part of this and is used to enhance learning in all subject areas. The bespoke individualised curriculum at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 is divided into the following subjects: Mathematics, English, Science, Geography, History, Arabic, Islam, DT, Morals and Society, Art, Music, PE, Computing

Children develop communication and collaboration skills through shared exploration and take on increasing levels of responsibility and independence in their learning during the Primary Years.

★ Middle and high school (11-18 years old)

Years 7-9: The curriculum includes core subjects as well as physical education, performing and visual arts, innovation, digital skills and computing, humanities and modern foreign languages (French and Spanish) and personal and social education.

Years 10-11: The core subjects are followed by a wide range of elective subjects. The school also continues to study personal and social education.

Years 12-13: The curriculum in the final two years of high school follows one of three pathways: · IB Diploma Programme · IB Diploma Programme · BTEC International Level 3 Extended Diploma For IB students (two routes) there is a range of subject choices covering all IB groups (languages, humanities, science, mathematics and art).

For BTEC students they have the choice of studying in art and design, business or sports.

Assessment Reporting:

The Secondary School assesses through a range of methods, including classwork, home learning, summative and formative assessments, with regular reports generated throughout the year to track student achievement and progress. JESS reports provide information on student learning behaviors (self-management, participation, reflection and collaboration) and academic skills (knowledge and understanding, inquiry, critical thinking and communication). In addition to reports, you will also receive timely feedback on your child's academic and personal progress at parent-teacher conferences throughout the year.

Life outside the classroom:

The Secondary School provides students with a wide range of opportunities to extend their school experience beyond the classroom. All students are actively encouraged to participate in a range of activities, and while sports and the arts are very obvious, everyone will participate in clubs from sewing to investing.

extracurricular activities

Extra-curricular life at JESS refers to the activities and learning experiences that take place in school alongside the academic curriculum. Sport, Music, Drama, Duke of Edinburgh and Extra-curricular activities form the basis of JESS’s vibrant curriculum. This is essential to providing a well-rounded education for JESS students whose school life is enhanced with the development of personal skills.

International Awards

JESS Secondary students have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, open to all young people aged 14-25, to provide them with life skills to make an impact on themselves, their community and the world. The Award aims to develop young people into responsible, active citizens who make a positive contribution to society. It offers a balanced, non-competitive and enjoyable programme of voluntary activities that encourage personal discovery, growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility and service to the community.

MaD Award

The Making A Difference (MaD) Award is designed to allow JESS Primary students to develop life skills and nurture their passions outside of the classroom. The MaD Award encourages students to ‘make a difference’ for themselves, their local community and the wider world.

The MaD Award is divided into a number of sections, namely Culture, Service, Independence and Performance. Students are set various tasks in these areas to develop key skills, which become more challenging as they progress from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 3. As part of their awards, students are regularly rewarded to encourage commitment, perseverance and excellence. In addition, the MaD Award Ambassador Cup is awarded each term to students who have made outstanding contributions to the MAD Award.

JESS also offers exciting educational trips and experiences for students and constantly seeks out enriching opportunities for students to participate, such as the Dubai Fitness Challenge or service experiences, such as the Charity School Award organized by the KHDA.

Extracurricular Activities

JESS offers a rich and varied extracurricular program for students in Year 3 and above. The extracurricular program is tailored to the interests of students as much as possible. It changes with the music and sports calendar each term and to adapt to weather conditions. JESS aims to provide students with opportunities to experience new areas of activity and develop into an individual with a range of interests that may extend beyond their academic year. These extracurricular activities include sports, performing arts, creative, social, academic, health

Travel and Visits

Taking learning outside the classroom to broaden the education of JESS students is an important part of the travel and visit ethos at JESS. All students will have the opportunity to participate in school trips, including early visits to local mosques and educational activity centers, as well as service trips to Africa and Asia to help underprivileged communities.

JESS wants every student to have a safe and positive learning experience, and each trip will have a clear goal and learning outcomes. The true value of travel is that students are able to make real-world connections and relate their experiences outside the classroom to their everyday lives.

The JESS residential program develops in scope and sequence, and these experiences and learning are built upon as students progress through JESS. JESS's Year 3 Elementary students will camp overnight on JESS's playing fields, and JESS's Year 7 Middle School students have the opportunity to camp outdoors and learn new skills in a desert environment and on the water. By Year 9, students can choose trips with higher skill levels, including a service trip to Kenya. JESS's travel culminates in a Year 12 CAS and Duke of Edinburgh International Gold Award trip to Vietnam.
